A vacation represents a chance to get away from it all, but people who suffer from acid reflux disease and heartburn symptoms may find their pains travel with them. Follow these tips to avoid letting heartburn ruin your vacation plans.
Tips to Prevent Heartburn on Vacation
- Eat sensibly. You may be tempted to forget all about healthy eating while you’re on vacation, but indulging in too many fatty foods can trigger your heartburn. The key is to practice moderation. If there’s a local dish you’re desperate to try, stick with a small portion to reduce your risk for reflux.
- Watch what you drink. Even on vacation, heartburn can be triggered by cocktails, especially if they’re mixed with citrus juices. Again, a little moderation can go a long way toward preventing heartburn. Another tip is to load up on water, which can keep you properly hydrated, assist with proper digestion, and help you avoid the urge to overeat.
- Take your medication. If you take prescription medication to decrease the production of stomach acid, make sure to pack that into your suitcase before you go. If you don’t take prescription medication regularly, consider bringing over-the-counter antacids.
- Get enough sleep, but not too much. Are you getting a sense that moderation applies to just about everything when it comes to preventing heartburn? Not getting enough sleep can trigger heartburn, but lying down for extended periods of time can also cause reflux. To prevent heartburn, be sure to wait a few hours after you’ve eaten before hitting the hotel bed or hammock.
