Speedy Solutions for Heartburn

If you suffer from heartburn or Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD), you are not alone. It’s estimated that 60 million people suffer from these maladies at some point in their lives. Heartburn occurs when acid from the stomach moves up into the esophagus. It can be a sudden sharp pain, or a dull, persistent ache.

Luckily, there are several quick and easy ways to ease the pain of heartburn. Here are a few of the best and fastest solutions:

  • Antacids. There are a number of brands that are available over the counter. Some, like Rolaids and Tums contain calcium to counteract the acid. Others use magnesium, instead. Relief is usually instant, but may only last a short time.
  • Bananas. If you do not have an antacid handy, try eating a banana. The fruit can help soothe the pain of heartburn.
  • Baking Soda. A teaspoon dissolved in an eight ounce glass of water will counteract the acid. Be careful about overusing this remedy because of baking soda’s sodium content.
  • Papaya enzyme pills. This natural remedy is sold in many health food stores in the Dallas area. You can also try eating fresh papaya.
  • Chewing gum. Chewing stimulates saliva production. When saliva moves into your throat, it can help wash away excess acid. Make sure that the gum you choose is sugar-free, since sugared gum can make heartburn worse.

One of the best ideas is to try to avoid heartburn altogether. Many people’s symptoms are triggered by specific foods. Alcohol, caffeine, and carbonated drinks are other common triggers. Try eating at least two hours before going to bed, avoiding tight clothing and avoiding overeating, as well.
